Beth Gutcheon author of Gossip: A Novel

Reading now- ” I just finished Lily King’s gorgeous new novel, Euphoria. Still lost in the world of it — it’s beautiful, incredibly smart and absolutely
gripping.”

Next up- “Next up on the page (for a change of pace) Sylvia Juke Morris’s
new volume on Clare Booth Luce. If I can get it away from my husband who
can’t seem to put it down. And for pure fun I am loving Christopher
Buckley’s hilarious collection of essays, Enough About You, trying to make
it last all summer. For Audiobooks, listening on the road and in the
garden, I just finished The Heist, Daniel Silva’s newest thriller and it’s a
knockout.”

Working on- ” I am polishing a first draft of a murder mystery set in a resort hotel in Maine, my first crack at the genre. I thought it was time to have some fun. No title, yet, but to give you an idea, the name of the folder
where I keep the work files for it is Marple.”

Joe Wallace author of Invasive Species

Reading now- “I’m actually reading two books simultaneously right now. The first is John Crowley’s exceptionally beautiful post-apocalyptic novel Engine Summer, which I think deserves to be better known. (As does Crowley, whose novel Little, Big is also a brilliant work.) I usually only read one book at a time, but when a new student of mine (I work as a writing mentor for students in the local high school) said that I could learn a lot about her by reading The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart, how could I say no? This delightful YA novel reminds me a little of J.K. Rowling, a little more of Roald Dahl, but it heads off in all sorts of directions of its own, too.”

Working on- ”
Synchronously, I’m also writing two novels right now. (Again not usual for me.) One is The Slavemakers, the follow-up to Invasive Species, my own apocalyptic novel of last year. The other is very different, a story exploring a tragedy’s consequences on its participants decades later. If I had to name the biggest inspirations for this book, they would be Kate Atkinson’s wonderful Jackson Brodie books and Laura Lippman’s superb recent stand-alone novels.”
